Fourth Graders Use Math Skills at ShopRite

Brookdale students learn to budget in life-like application of school skills.

Brookdale School students put their math skills to work at ShopRite.

On Thursday, Fourth grade students from the nearby elementary school visited the store to take part for a morning of mock shopping.

The visit was part of the Young Consumer Program organized by the educational consulting group Cogmotion. Given a $100 budget for a family of four, students took to the shelves to gather as much food as they could without going over the target.

“It’s an invaluable life experience to go to a grocery store and use math for a real life application,” Brookdale Principal Joseph Fleres said.

Clad in orange Brookdale shirts, students were in high spirits during the visit to the store. Besides the shopping exercise, students also ate lunch at the store and took part in games and competitions.
