BRICK, NJ — With a blizzard warning in effect for Ocean County and forecasters predicting up to 18 inches of snow and strong winds, Brick Township officials have issued several reminders to residents ahead of the storm.

A blizzard warning is in effect for Ocean County from 7 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. Saturday, with a potential for 12 to 18 inches of snow and winds gusting as high as 50 mph.

Gov. Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency that takes effect at 5 p.m. Friday.

In addition to the heavy snow and strong winds, coastal flooding is anticipated in areas that flood often during the hours before and after high tide Saturday morning.

Because of the storm predictions, the Brick Township Public Works Recycling Center on Ridge Road will be closed on Saturday, and the Brick Recreation Wrestling and Recreation Basketball programs and clinics are canceled for the weekend.

Brick Township officials are urging residents to move their vehicles off the road and remove all basketball hoops, garbage cans and other items from the road to make clearing the roads easier for plow crews.

"We began treating the roads early this morning and will be plowing throughout the weekend," officials said.

Residents in low-lying areas can park their vehicles in the following parking lots to protect them: Overflow parking on Route 35 at Brick Beach III; Angela Hibbard Park, on Drum Point Road south of Baywood Boulevard; Edmund Hibbard Park, accessible from Cherry Quay Road and from Tiller Lane; and at Windward Beach on Princeton Avenue.

They also are urging patience with the plowing operations.

"If we get the predicted 12 inches, it will take 36 to 48 hours to clear the roads," Brick officials said. "If we get more accumulation than that, expect that it will take longer" to clear the roads.

The wind creates the potential for whiteout conditions and the roads will be slippery, so residents are urged to stay home.

"You can do your part to help keep everyone safer and allow emergency services to function more effectively if you stay off the roads during the storm," officials said.

They also asked that residents clear snow from around fire hydrants near their property.
