Maintenance Worker Sentenced In Apartment Burglary In Jackson

The man was convicted following a two-week jury trial of taking $4,500 and an Apple watch from the apartment.

JACKSON, NJ — A maintenance worker has been sentenced to 364 days in the county jail in connection with the theft of cash and an Apple watch from an apartment at the complex where he worked, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office announced.

Troy Jones, 59, of Jackson, was sentenced Friday to jail as a condition of a three-year probationary term by Superior Court Judge Dina Vicari for his conviction on charges of burglary and theft following a two-week jury trial in March, the prosecutor's office said.

The theft happened Dec. 22, 2021, the prosecutor's office said. Jackson police were called to an apartment on Chatham Court West in the Gardens at Jackson Twenty-One apartment complex and and learned the residents of the apartment came home about 6 p.m. and found $4,500 in cash and an Apple watch were missing, authorities said.

The investigation found Jones had used a master key to get into the apartment and took the money and the watch, authorities said.

Jones was charged with burglary and theft on Jan. 12, 2022, and surrendered to authorities on Jan. 13, 2022. He was taken to the Ocean County Jail, and subsequently released as a consequence of New Jersey Bail Reform, the prosecutor's office said.

Assistant Prosecutors Madeline Buczynski and Iva Krasteva handled the case on behalf of the state. Jackson Township Police Department and their detectives, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Trial Unit, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, combined on the investigation and prosecution.
