BRICK, NJ - Brick-based hot cocoa manufacturer Corim Industries is voluntarily recalling its single serve hot chocolate pods due to undeclared allergens in the product, federal officials said.

The recall, issued due to undeclared peanuts in peanut butter hot chocolate products, affects single-serve pods under the brand names Cocoa de Aroma, Smart Sips, Jersey Charm and Colonial Coffee. Affected pack sizes range from 24-count single serve coffee pods (12.7 oz carton) to 12-count single serve coffee pods (4.44 oz carton).

“People who have allergies to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the … products,” the FDA said in a statement.

The recall was issued after the manufacturer found that a replacement flavoring ingredient from a different supplier may have trace levels of peanut that was not declared on bulk label or finished product label to downstream partners. After further testing, Corim indicated that the trace levels of peanut may be below the limit of detection in the product.

“The process has been corrected and the company has instituted additional safety checks and corrective actions, including discontinuing the use of this particular flavoring ingredient,” the FDA said.

The affected products were distributed to nationwide resellers from Jan. 11, 2021 to Nov. 30, 2022. Only products with Best By dates (on the bottom of the carton) between Jan. 11, 2023 and Jan. 11, 2025 are impacted, the FDA said.

No illnesses or deaths have been reported in connection with the issue, the FDA added.

Those with a peanut allergy who have purchased the affected products are urged not to consume it and instead dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumers with questions may contact Corim Industries at (732) 840-1670 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.
