Patch Readers Sound Off on Stop Signs in Brick

We asked Patch readers if their neighborhoods could use more stop signs. Here are some intersections they flagged as hazardous.

If you’ve noticed an intersection in your neighborhood that could use a stop sign, you’re not alone.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that one-third of all intersection crashes in the United States occur at crossings controlled by stop signs. While they aren’t a perfect solution to dangerous intersections, studies have shown that installing all-way signs can reduce accidents by 40 to 60 percent.

When we asked Patch readers in Brick where they wanted to see a stop sign, some asked for stoplights while others just requested that drivers stop at the signs that are already in place. That’s not too much to ask according to a report from the Federal Highway Administration that showed the simple, and cheap, addition of “Stop Ahead” wording on roadways reduced accidents at controlled intersections by 15 percent.

We realize that no one knows the roads in Brick better than its residents. Here’s what Patch readers shared with us about their neighborhood’s intersections:

  • "People in Brick rarely pay attention to the stop signs, seriously. Twice today on Maple Avenue I almost got clobbered by someone flying through a stop sign."
  • "The intersection of Beverson and Hooper"
  • "Hambers Bridge and Rt. 70 need a pedestrian walkway from the McDonalds over to the A&P Plaza. I don't know how many times I've seen close calls of people being hit by cars. This area is too dangerous for walkers."
  • "Burrsville and 88. It wouldn't be so bad if people would use their blinkers."
  • "Not a stop sign, but Brick definitely needs a green arrow at Old Hooper and Drum Point. I nearly hit someone using the crosswalk because I was trying to creep up to see and avoid getting smashed making a left onto Old Hooper from Drum Point. You can't even see cars coming."
