Fire Destroys Somerville Cop's Home, Family Loses Everything In Bridgewater

A fundraiser was started to help Somerville Police Officer Vito Spadea and his family after a fire destroyed their home on Saturday.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — A fire destroyed a Somerville Police Officer's home and everything they owned in Bridgewater on Saturday.

The fire was reported around 12:30 p.m. on Eastbrook Road in Bridgewater. While the family is safe, "they are now facing the heartbreaking reality of starting completely from scratch," according to a GoFundMe fundraiser set up for the family.

Somerville Police Officer Vito Spadea, his wife Kim, and their daughters, ages 8 and 10, have lost their "sense of comfort and stability every child deserves," according to the GoFundMe.

The family is known for always helping others. Vito Spadea serves as the D.A.R.E. officer for Somerville and ICS schools, while Kim serves as the president of the local school PTO.

"Together, they are known for going above and beyond—never hesitating to lend a hand, offer support, or step up when someone else is in need," according to the GoFundMe. "Now, it’s our turn to show up for them."

Since Saturday, the GoFundMe has already raised more than $100,000 for the family.

Funds raised will help provide immediate living needs, clothing, basic essentials, and the long-term process of rebuilding their lives.
