Somerset County Holds 20th Annual Youth Conference

From the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders:

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Somerset County teens in grades 7 to 12 are invited to attend Somerset County’s 20th annual Youth Conference on Thursday, October 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. The theme this year is “Leadership in Action: Qualities of a Leader.”

The conference will be held in Conference Room 1 of the Human Services Building, located at 27 Warren St., Somerville, N.J. 08876. Seating is limited to the first 70 registrants. The registration deadline is October 20. No walk-ins will be permitted.

Admission is free with one can of food, which will be donated to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County. Refreshments will be provided.

Certificates will be awarded to participants for 2.5 hours of community-service learning.

Freeholder Brian D. Levine, youth council liaison, will offer welcome remarks. He will be followed by keynote speaker Shrega Puglia of the Communication Public Speaking Leadership Academy in Somerset.

“This is the 20th consecutive year that we are hosting a youth conference, which will provide useful information and strategies for young people,” said Freeholder Brian D. Levine. “The conference is a fun way to meet other teens, learn lifelong skills and discuss relevant topics of interest and concern.

“This year’s program focuses on the qualities of a leader, which is valuable information no matter your age,” he said. “So many businesses offer leadership training for employees. Through this program, young adults will get a leg-up in understanding what businesses and institutions of higher learning value.”

The sessions include “True Colors,” which explores the varied personality types and ways to interact with people who approach life differently, and “Character Counts: Respect,” which addresses one of the six core ethical values known as the pillars of character.

The “Public Speaking” and Cooperation” sessions are interactive workshops that involve activities, games or scenarios.

The conference is sponsored by the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Somerset County Human Services Office of Operations & Planning and the Somerset County Youth Council.
