Somerset Shelter Cares For Dogs Found In Abandoned Squalor
Nearly 200 dogs were found in a Hunterdon County home living in squalor, and Somerset's shelter is doing what it can.
BRIDGEWATER, NJ — After nearly 200 dogs were found living in squalor Tuesday in what was described as a hoarding situation, the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter is working to provide homes for some of these pups. They're already fairly full but were able to provide shelter for four dogs.
Brian Bradshaw, the manager at the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter, was asked to help out by St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center because they needed skilled dog handlers, as many of the dogs weren't used to human contact. On Tuesday, Bradshaw spent much of the day transporting the pups, which he told Patch were mostly Parson Russell Terriers.
Reports say 20 dogs were found dead at the Hunterdon County home, whose owners had previously surrendered 30 dogs. Another 170 dogs are believed to have been neglected. The prosecutor's office said the dogs had limited human contact and little to no veterinary care.

"As disheartening as it is that there was a need to do this rescue, it is gratifying to be able to liberate the helpless dogs from their deplorable imprisonment," Bradshaw told Patch.
According to a report by News4, 20 dogs found on site were dead. The report also said the home was owned by a prominent breeder, whose dogs have won Best in Breed awards from the Westminster Kennel Club. Charges are pending.

The Monmouth County SPCA led the rescue efforts. They say they need blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, paper towels, cleaning supplies and dog food/treats. You can drop off donations at the shelter at 260 Wall St., Eatontown or use their Amazon wish list.
"We are always willing to help animals when they are in need," he said.
