Tips for Staying Cool Offered by Bridgewater Health Department

Staying indoors, drinking lots of water suggested.

With temperatures expected to reach over 100 degrees this week, the Bridgewater Health Department is advising residents to stay indoors and stay hydrated.

"Outdoor temperatures and humidity are expected to remain elevated during the next few days and throughout the remainder of the summer season," the department said in a press release.

"Spending time in air conditioned places such as libraries, movies, malls or other public buildings during the hottest hours of the day can reduce the risk for heat-related illness."

During normal business hours, residents who need cooling can visit the Senior Citizens Center, Municipal Complex or the Somerset County Library.

To combat the high heat, the department offered a few suggestions:

  • Drink more fluids (but less fluids with caffeine)
  • Stay indoors
  • Take a cool shower over using an electric fan
  • Wear sunscreen and lighter clothing
  • Check on neighbors
  • Limit outdoor activity to morning and evening hours
Anyone with heat-related safety concerns should contact the department at (908) 725-5750 or by email at health@bridgewaternj.gov.
