Attempted House Break-In Under Investigation In Morris County

The suspects, who were not apprehended by authorities, fled the scene before breaking into the home in a light-colored vehicle.

CHATHAM, NJ — Police are investigating an attempted break-in that happened on Sunday morning in Chatham Township.

According to police, at approximately 6 a.m. on Sunday, three suspects attempted to break into a residence on Ormont Road. The suspects pried open a window but were ultimately scared off by the homeowner who was inside the house.

The suspects, who were not apprehended by authorities, then fled the scene in a light-colored sedan, police said.

The police are asking everyone to safeguard their homes and vehicles, including locking all windows.

Members of the township police department said recently that they are once again seeing an increase in attempted home and vehicle burglaries in the community.

On Dec. 26, police notified the community that three attempted break-ins had been reported throughout the township, but no suspects had been taken into custody.

In Chatham Borough, burglars recently forced entry into a home on Walnut Street by breaking through a window on the first floor. According to police, on Dec. 19, burglars went into the home searching for vehicle keys, which were used to steal a 2021 Audi S5 parked in the driveway.

At the township committee reorganization meeting last week, Mayor Stacey Ewald emphasized the committee's commitment to the protection of all residents. Starting this month, the township will be appointing the police chief as the office of emergency management coordinator.

"If you observe anything suspicious, please report it to the Chatham Township Police immediately," township police said.
