Committee Recognizes Autism Awareness Month

Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner proclaimed April as Autism Awareness Month in the township.

Autism, she said, affects 1 in 88 children nationwide and 1 in 49 in New Jersey. It often requires specialized care and attention all throughout one's life, though early diagnosis and treatment, she said, "can lead to significantly improved lives."

Superintendent Michael LaSusa said the proposed 2013-14 school budget includes increased programs for students with autism and other developmental issues.

Hagner called attention to Erin O'Connor, a junior at Chatham High School, who will hold a fundraising raffle at Chatham High Friday from 4 to 8:30 p.m. The event will raise money for Autism Awareness.
