Downed Trees, Closed Roads after Monday Storm

The storm created a tornado in nearby Summit and New Providence.

While Chatham Borough survived Monday's storm without major damage, according to Chatham Borough Police Chief Philip J. Crosson, Chatham Township took a worse beating.

Sgt. Christopher Slayton said multiple trees were down in the township after the rain and wind came through town Monday morning.

"We had two road closures briefly" due to the storm, Slayton said, on Hillside Terrace and in the 400 block of River Road. Both roads had wires and trees down across the roads.

Other trees down in town were cleared away quickly by the Chatham Township Department of Public Works.

Compared to nearby New Providence, Summit and Berkeley Heights, the two Chathams came through the storm without major difficulty. A tornado "touched down in Berkeley Heights near the Passaic River just west of Garfield Street,” according to a statement by the National Weather Service (NWS). “It passed northeast through New Providence and lifted in Summit near Evergreen Road.”

There was extensive tree damage observed along the tornado path, according to the statement. The greatest damage was sustained at the Sewage Treatment Plant near Snyder Avenue in Berkeley Heights.

The tornado measured nearly 50 yards wide and spanned 4.8 miles long, with estimated wind speeds at 85 mph, according to the NWS.

No injuries were reported.
