Girls' Garage Sale Raises Money for Veterans Christmas Program

Chatham residents support veterans at VA hospital in Lyons.

A Florham Park resident who volunteers at the VA hospital in Lyons stopped by a Chatham garage sale in November and struck up a conversation.

JoAnn Naklicki started talking with Carolyn Remmey about an "Adopt a Vet for Christmas Program" run by American Legion Riders Post 12, which raises money to buy Christmas presents for each of the veterans at Lyons.

It turned out Remmey's granddaughter, Remmey McEnroe, and her friend, Jemma Thorne, overheard their conversation and decided they wanted to help.

They set up a table at the garage sale and raised $65.75 for the program.

Naklicki said the Legion Riders planned to use about $50 on each veteran, purchasing gifts including sweaters, hats and flannel shirts so the veterans know people care about them.

"These two adorable girls are a perfect example of selfless giving," Naklicki said.

She said the Legion Riders also visit the vets at least twice a month with subs, pizza and snacks, and sponsor parties for holidays and other events during the year.

"We rely solely on outside funds and every dollar donated goes to our vets," she said. "Nothing is ever spent on anything other than them."

Donations can be made to American Legion Riders Post 12 and mailed to JoAnn Naklicki, 13 Brandywyne Drive, Florham Park, NJ 07932.
