Phone Scammer Poses As Chatham Township Officer; Police Issue Warning

The scammer identified themselves as a member of the Chatham Township Police Department. They are not, police said.

CHATHAM, NJ — The Chatham Township Police Department issued a warning on Monday morning in response to a recent tip about phony texts being sent under their name.

According to the statement made by the department, police recently became aware that a series of fraudulent texts were going out to local residents.

The sender – who identified themselves as a member of the Chatham Township Police Department – said that they were offering 10 percent off police department hoodies.

"These are not legitimate texts messages. The Chatham Township Police will never text or call to solicit any donations or to sell any products," police said.

All residents have been warned about the phone scam and are urged not to click on any links contained in the text messages.

Members of the department have also previously warned all individuals not to provide personal information or payment to anyone claiming to be affiliated with the Chatham Township Police Department.
