Driver Hits Tree In Fatal Union County Crash (UPDATE): Police

A man was pronounced dead after veering across several lanes and crashing into a tree on Sunday, police said.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — Update: Rahway Police identified the driver as 67-year-old Gary O'Neill of Rahway.

A fatal car crash occurred on Sunday afternoon in Rahway, according to an announcement from Rahway Police.

Police rushed to St. Georges Avenue near Stanley Place at around 4:31 p.m. on Sunday after reports of a serious car crash. According to a preliminary investigation, police said a man was driving a beige-colored Chevrolet Malibu when he veered across the southbound lanes on St. George Avenue and struck a tree.

Police said the cause of the accident is currently being investigated by the Rahway Police Traffic Bureau.

The driver was rushed to RWJ Hospital in Rahway for further medical assistance, police said, and he was later pronounced deceased.

The north and southbound lanes on St. Georges Ave. were closed between West Lake Ave. and WestInman Ave. from 4:31 p.m. to 6:48 p.m. while the crash was being investigated on Sunday.
