NJ American Water Invests $7.9M In Union County Infrastucture

The company will replace over three miles of an aging water main in Union County this month.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — New Jersey American Water is set to replace over three miles of an aging water main in Cranford and Linden this month.

The company will upgrade the aging four- and six-inch cast iron water lines that were installed as far back as the 1920s with new eight- and 12-inch ductile iron main along the following streets:

  • Orange Avenue from Pacific Avenue to Birch Street
  • Prospect Avenue from Manor Avenue to Riverside Drive
  • Arbor Street/ Sutton Lane from Belmont Avenue to Orange Avenue
  • Sylvester Street from Cranford Avenue to Hamilton Avenue
  • Claremont Place from Henley Avenue to Casino Avenue
  • Casino Avenue from Riverside Drive to Orange Avenue

Linden

  • Adams Street from St. Georges Avenue to Caroline Avenue
  • Alexander Avenue from St. Georges Avenue to the dead end
  • Bernard Avenue from St. Georges Avenue to Mildred Avenue
  • Caroline Avenue from Garfield Street to North Park Avenue
  • Garfield Street from St. Georges Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue
  • Ingalls Avenue from Alexander Avenue to North Park Avenue
  • McKinley Street from Dill Avenue to Mildred Avenue

The project also includes replacing 22 fire hydrants and 317 utility-owned service lines along the pipeline route.

Additionally, New Jersey American Water will replace any customer-owned service line that has been identified as lead or galvanized as part of a statewide initiative to remove all lead and galvanized service lines by 2031.

This $7.9 million investment will continue to advance water service reliability and

increase water flows for household consumption and fire protection in the Union County community.

This improvement is part of New Jersey American Water’s multimillion-dollar initiative to accelerate the renewal of water infrastructure that has reached the end of its useful life in more than 100 communities across the state.

New Jersey American Water’s qualified contractors began work this week and expect to be completed within approximately five months, weather permitting.

Work hours will be from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. in Linden and 5 p.m. in Cranford, Monday through Friday. Work outside of these hours is not expected unless required to maintain project schedule.

Final street restorations will be completed in late summer or early fall of 2023.

Project timelines are subject to change due to a variety of factors, including weather and
availability of supplies.

For the public’s and workers’ safety, traffic restrictions and/or alternating traffic patterns
are likely to occur during work hours. All emergency vehicles and local traffic will be
allowed access during construction. New Jersey American Water advises drivers and pedestrians to take caution in the vicinity of work sites.
