These Union Co. Bagel Shops Were Ranked Among The Best In NJ: Report

Three Union County stores made NJ.com's list of the best bagel shops in the state. Can you guess which ones?

UNION COUNTY, NJ — While New York proclaims itself the bagel capital of America, many New Jersey residents would disagree.

In celebration of National Bagel Day, which was this past Sunday, NJ.com ranked the 44 best bagel shops in New Jersey, and several Union County stores made the cut.

Bagel Chateau in Westfield was ranked the highest in all of Union County, coming in at #14.

Food writer Jeremy Schneider praised Bagel Chateau for its "nicely sized bagels with impeccable crusty exteriors." He said their sun-dried tomato bagel was especially great.

Schneider added that the Westfield shop gets creative with its egg sandwiches, such as the Bagel Chateau "Dutch," which includes potatoes and onions mixed into egg on a bagel.

Then coming in at #23 is Kosher Bagels Supreme in Springfield. This shop has been open since the 1980s, according to NJ.com, and food writer Peter Genovese recommends the egg and cinnamon raisin bagels.

Kosher Bagels offers 15 bagels and 20 different spreads, including sable — the smoked black cod. Genovese also recommended trying the bagel sticks, which are shaped like a cinnamon twist doughnut.

Lastly Bagel and Beans in Union was ranked at #29. Schneider raved about the whitefish sandwich, which he got on a bialy.

"The salty fish paired with the flavorful onion atop the bialy made for one of the best bagel-ish sandwiches I had," Schneider wrote.

You might also be wondering what bagel shop was ranked #1 in the state. NJ.com argues that Teaneck Road Hot Bagels is the best, and Food and Wine Magazine named it one of the 50 best bagels in the United States back in 2021.

"The small shop prepares perfectly sized bagels with an exquisite crusty exterior and a soft, chewy interior," Schneider said.
