Cranford's New Environmental Program Honors Residents
Individuals can commemorate milestones and also help grow the tree canopy throughout the Township.
CRANFORD, NJ — There's a new way to honor loved ones or important aspects of life in the Cranford community.
The Township of Cranford in collaboration with the Cranford Shade Tree Commission (STC) is inviting residents take part in their new "Plant A Tree: A Living Tribute" initiative. Through this program, individuals can commemorate milestones by planting a tree and also help grow the tree canopy throughout the Township.
“Cranford's Plant a Tree Program...empowers residents to make a lasting impact on our community. By planting a tree, you create a meaningful tribute that endures for decades while also providing habitat for wildlife, improving air quality, and helping to reduce the risk of flooding,” added Mayor Terrence Curran, STC commissioner liaison.

Each donor gets a digital certificate, customized with who is being honored and why. The digital certificate is delivered by email.
A variety of species and locations are selected by the STC to support long-term health and growth of the plants. While the spring typically is the most optimal time to plant, the timing may vary based on weather and environmental factors.

Donations of $450 cover the tree and planting, and can be made using a debit card, credit card, e-check, or by a check made out to: Township of Cranford, Attn: Shade Tree Commission, 8 Springfield Ave., Cranford, NJ 07016.
Donations of any amount go directly to the STC's tree-planting fund, used to enhance the environment in rights-of-ways and property.
The Shade Tree efforts are part of the Cranford Community Forestry Management Plan rolled out in 2020. Through this initiative, the Township looks to use sustainable methods to provide habitat for wildlife, reduce flood risk, remove carbon dioxide, improve air quality, and support biodiversity.
