Emergency Care Services Upgraded At Union County Facility: See Where
The first major renovation in 18 years covers more than 10,000 square feet of the facility.
UNION, NJ — A $6.4 million renovation project at Overlook Medical Center in Union was unveiled on Nov. 14.
The satellite emergency facility updated more than 10,000 square feet of its area designated for patient care. Among the upgrades were an additional three treatment areas, enhanced privacy partitions, a redesign of the main nurses' central medication room, additional space and equipment for the on-site lab, and a fully-upgraded patient monitoring system.
After breaking ground in 2024, this project became the first major renovation in the 18 years after Atlantic Health took over the former Union Hospital. According to Atlantic Health, the Union Emergency Department now receives more than 36,000 visits per year and serves patients from Union County and other nearby municipalities.

"For almost two decades, our commitment to keeping emergency care within Union Township has led to better health for the surrounding communities," said Stephanie Schwartz, Senior Vice President, Atlantic Health System and President of Overlook Medical Center.
The Emergency Department houses on-site laboratory and imaging, telestroke capabilities, and has its own dedicated pharmacist. In 2023, the Union facility became the only care unit internationally to have received the Emergency Nurses Association's Lantern Award for five years in a row.

The honor recognizes departments that "demonstrate exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy, and research."
What began as a satellite emergency care unit in 2007 has now grown into a multi-specialty outpatient center that offers primary care, physical therapy, wound care, oncology, and surgery.
"We are proud to be the place that people know they can turn to when they need care," Schwartz added on the growth of their reach in recent years.
Atlantic Health also operates Overlook Medical Center in Summit, and serves more than half of the state across its networks and facilities in 14 counties.
The Union facility is located at 1000 Galloping Hill Road and is open 24 hours every day of the week.
