Girl Shot Dead, Union County Teen Charged: Officials

The two knew each other, according to authorities.

EDISON, NJ — A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot over the weekend in Edison, and a Plainfield teen is facing charges in connection to her death.

According to officials, authorities received a 911 call around 1:20 a.m. on Saturday reporting a shooting. When officers arrived at a home along Grove Avenue, they found a 17-year-old girl from Edison had been shot.

The teen died at the scene. A 17-year-old boy was also at the scene and was taken into custody.

According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, the boy is charged with acts of juvenile delinquency for offenses which, if carried out by an adult, would constitute aggravated manslaughter, unlawful possession of a handgun, and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose.

Both the boy and the girl knew each other. This was not a random act of violence, authorities said.

The boy is being held at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center while he waits for a preliminary hearing before a Family Court Judge.
