Red Ribbon Day to Feature Moonwalk, Zoo, Batman

A community parade, a moonwalk, a petting zoo, rock climbing, and even a helicopter landing and a special guest visit from Batman are all part of the fun at the 11th Annual Red Ribbon Day in Union County, scheduled for Saturday, October 24 at Nomahegan Park on Springfield Avenue in Cranford.

All of the activities are free and open to the public, along with free performances and informational exhibits.

Red Ribbon Day helps to raise awareness about substance abuse prevention, early intervention, and treatment services, capping a week of events focusing on school-age children.  The focus on fun helps to create a family friendly atmosphere that encourages parents and children to communicate.

“The Freeholder Board is proud to join with Prevention Links, public safety officers, and many other community organizations to help bring families and children together in a positive and supportive way,” said Union County Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella.

Red Ribbon Day will kick off with a parade featuring emergency vehicles, ROTC groups, police cars and even bagpipes.  Any person or group is welcome to join in.  Participants are asked to assemble at the rear parking lot of the David Brearly School by 9:00 a.m.

The parade will step out at 10:00 a.m. and march to Nomahegan Park.

At 11:00 a.m. the Red Ribbon Day ceremonies will begin in Nomahegan Park, along with fun activities from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Picnics are encouraged, and food vendors will also be available.
