Starplex Cinema Not Honoring Mega Movie Gift Cards

The new theater in the Brunswick Square Mall stopped accepting previously issued gift cards after 30 days.

A representative of Starplex Cinemas, which in May, says the theater stopped accepting gift cards and credit issued by the previous theater after 30 days.

“The problem is that when Mega Movies left, it became impossible for us to validate the cards and see how much was left,” said Traci Hoey, marketing director for Starplex Cinemas. “The system is gone. There is no way to check a balance, so we tried to help people out when they came. At first we switched them out with our passes, but after 30 days we had to move on and stop honoring them.”

Starplex Cinemas took over the space formerly occupied by Mega Movies when its lease was not renewed. The change took not only customers by surprise, but its former owner Howard Grant.

Hoey said there is no real responsibility for Starplex to honor deals struck by the former owner, but it has tried to work with people. She also said that Starplex has been unable to contact Grant in order to tell customers if there is another place to use the cards.

“The Mega Movies lease expired with the mall and the mall did not renew it, so we moved in as a new tenant,” said Hoey. “We didn’t take over Mega Movies or inherit its space. It was empty and they asked if we wanted to come in and operate as a theater, and we did.”

In addition, Ben & Jerry’s and Nathan’s, located in the theater and formerly franchised by Grant, have recently reopened under the theater’s management. New signs that say Starplex Luxury Cinemas also are being created and the theater has now gone 100 percent digital.
