“We are excited for work to begin; this is long overdue and we look forward to, once complete, providing residents access to a renovated library that will be a place where people feel welcome to sit, relax, study, and engage,” said Allan M. Kleiman, MLS, director of the Edison Public Library.

Once complete, the Main Library will feature an updated teen center and Makerspace, study rooms, and updated technology throughout, including improved Wi-fi and print management systems along with additional aesthetic improvements.

“We have envisioned this project for some time and are looking forward to modernizing the building to better serve the community,” said Kleiman. “When complete, Edison’s Main Library will be more customer-service focused.”

The $1.8 million project is being undertaken by Manasquan-based Meyer Construction. It is paid for through the library budget and at no additional cost to taxpayers.

“Due to our fiscal responsibility, the library board was able to put aside monies over the past four years strictly for capital improvements,” said Edison Public Library Board President Pat Massey. “We are proud to be able to embark on this project at no additional cost to taxpayers.”

The Main Library opened its doors at its current location on Plainfield Avenue, between Route 27 and the Edison Train Station, in 1965.

The building was expanded in 1975 and again in 1987 with this current project marking the first major renovation to the Library in 37 years.

While renovations are taking place at the Main Library, there may be intermittent disruptions or limited access to services and materials.

Patrons can continue to access Edison’s Online Library, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can stop by the North Edison and Clara Barton Branches.
