Edison Public Library To Host Grand Re-Opening Following Renovations

The library's Plainfield Avenue location will fully reopen to patrons on Sunday, marking the completion of a two-phase renovation project.

EDISON, NJ — Following an extensive renovation designed to better serve the community’s needs, the Edison Public Library will kick off the new year by welcoming patrons back to a fully reopened and renovated building over the weekend.

On Sunday, the first floor of the Main Library (located at 340 Plainfield Avenue) will be officially accessible to patrons, marking the completion of a two-phase renovation project that began in mid-2024.

“This renovation represents our commitment to lifelong learning and community engagement, with the goal of ensuring that the Edison Public Library continues to serve as a hub, offering residents of all ages the opportunity to interact, connect, and obtain access to endless resources, programs, and services,” Director Allan Kleiman said.

According to Kleiman, the $1.8 million renovation project (paid for through the library budget and at no additional cost to taxpayers) was completed in two phases to allow continued access to essential services while construction was underway.

Phase one of the project, which focused on the upper level, was completed in early 2025.

The space, dedicated to the adult collection, includes upgraded technology and expanded public workstations, quiet reading and study areas, a renovated program space, the addition of a conference room, a makerspace, and updated carpeting, lighting, and seating, officials said.

Phase two of the project, which focused on the lower level, was completed in December and remains dedicated to children and teens.

In addition to a children’s play area and both a designated storytime and teen space, officials said the first floor now also boasts a renovated meeting room, computers and a cafe.

“Our overall goal was to reconfigure space and renovate the building in a way that better served patrons' needs,” Kleiman said. “These improvements will enable us to offer a more welcoming, functional, and accessible space for years to come and reflect our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our community.”

To celebrate their reopening, the Edison Public Library will host a small, private ceremony on Saturday, and patrons will have access to both floors the following day.

Regular hours of operation on Sunday are from noon to 5 p.m. Beginning at the official grand re-opening and moving forward, residents will also be able to receive new library cards at all branches.

Four options, each featuring a design with the library’s new logo, will be available to choose from:

“We are thrilled to welcome everyone back to a building that not only reflects our mission of learning, connection, and discovery, but also better meets the needs of today’s patrons,” Kleiman said. “We are grateful to our patrons for their support and patience during the renovation period and invite all Edison residents to our newly renovated facility.”

The Main Library opened its doors at its current location on Plainfield Avenue, between Route 27 and the Edison Train Station, in 1965, officials said.

That building was expanded in 1975 and again in 1987, with this latest project, completed by the Manasquan-based Meyer Construction, marking the first major renovation to the library in 37 years.
