Edison Cop Helps Nab Maryland Man Accused Of Stabbing His Sister

After a long police chase, Officer Phil Smith nabbed a man accused of stabbing his twin sister in Maryland.

EDISON, NJ – A Maryland man wanted for stabbing his twin sister in Maryland was caught by cops in NJ after a police chase Sunday night, authorities said.

Reese E. Wetzel, 23, from Ellicott City, Maryland, was wanted for attempted murder of his twin sister, whom he stabbed multiple times after an argument, authorities said. Wetzel fled the scene by stealing his sister's white 2019 Subaru Outback.

The stolen Subaru was spotted Sunday night in Edison Township near US Highway 1 and Main Street and and the Township’s Public Safty Telecommunicators relayed that sighting to units on patrol.

Officer Phil Smith promptly checked the area and saw the Subaru the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and closed the distance with his patrol vehicle, authorities said. After getting permission from Watch Commander Lieutenant Tim Hutson to proceed with the chase, Smith pursued Wetzel to Mahwah, where he stopped in the middle of I-287 north, mile marker 64.9.

Wetzel, refusing to exit the vehicle voluntarily, was eventually escorted out by Edison Police Officers and New Jersey State Troopers, authorities said.

Wetzel is currently in police custody and faces charges from the Edison Police Department, including receiving stolen property, eluding with a substantial risk of physical injury, fugitive from justice, resisting arrest, and obstructing administration of law.
