Residents can also contribute by joining YMCA's annual Janice Garbolino Memorial 5K on April 27.

EDISON, NJ — Over the past 10 years, Edison firefighters have been doing their bit to support cancer survivors.

The Edison Fire Fighters Local 1197 raised an impressive $44,500 over 10 years in support of the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program.

This funding, raised through their annual cancer awareness t-shirt sales, honors the memory of Janice Garbolino and supports cancer survivors on their journey to improved health and well-being.

Survivors often say they feel stronger, have more energy, and experience less fatigue. Some regain abilities they lost due to treatment, such as climbing stairs without difficulty or carrying groceries.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Edison Fire Fighters Local 1197 for their dedication and generosity,” YMCA President & CEO Rose Cushing, said in a statement.

“Their continued support ensures that cancer survivors in our community have access to this life-changing program.”

Through their efforts, the Edison Fire Fighters Local 1197 not only raise awareness about cancer but also provide vital resources to help survivors thrive.

Jim Walsh, a member of the Edison Fire Department who runs the T-shirt program says, it’s all about giving back to the community.

“Firefighters just love to help people,” Walsh said.
