Edison’s First Asian American Police Officer Dies After Long Battle With ALS
Joseph Vincent Luistro retired in 2020 after 27 years, making history as the first Asian American & Filipino American police officer.

EDISON, NJ – The Edison Police Department is mourning the death of a retired police officer who became the first Asian American to serve in the force.
Joseph Vincent Luistro, who served as a sergeant before his retirement, died after a long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), the Edison Police Department said. “Sergeant Luistro touched the lives of many with his selfless spirit,” Edison Police said in a Facebook post.
Luistro began his law enforcement career in July 1993 at Rutgers University-New Brunswick Police Department.

He then transferred to the Edison Police Department in December of 1999, becoming the Township’s first Asian American and Filipino American Police Officer.
In 2008, he assumed the role of President at the New Jersey Asian American Law Enforcement Association, actively fostering inclusivity in law enforcement careers. Luistro was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2016, making history as the first Asian American and Filipino American to hold this position in Edison.

He retired in September of 2020 after 27 years of service.
“Sergeant Luistro’s legacy lives on through his dedication to recruiting and mentoring new officers, especially from diverse backgrounds,” Edison Police said. “Sergeant Luistro’s impact extends far beyond his exemplary career. Let us remember him and support his family and friends during this challenging time.”
