Man Seriously Injured Walking Under Truck Near Rt. 1: Edison PD

Police say the Princeton man ducked under a tractor trailer that had stopped for gas and was hit when the truck started moving again.

EDISON, NJ — A Princeton man was seriously injured when the stopped truck he tried to walk under began moving and ran him over, Edison police said.

Neal Patel, 30, remains in the ICU at Robert Wood Johnson following the Tuesday night incident, police said. Police say Patel and a friend were walking near the Raceway Gas Station on Route 1 southbound, near Wooding Avenue, at 9:25 p.m. when he was hit.

Patel and the friend had left Wick Plaza and were on their way to the Global Inn, on the other side of Route 1, when Patel walked under a tractor-trailer that was parked to get gas at the Speedway, police said.

The driver of the truck did not realize Patel was under there, and began driving onto Route One, police said. Patel was run over by four tires and dragged 10 feet, police said.

Patel's friend did not attempt to walk under the truck, police said.

Police located the driver in Philadelphia later on Tuesday. He returned to Edison to assist with the investigation, and will not face charges.
