METUCHEN, NJ - Metuchen Mayor Jonathan M Busch has joined a growing chorus of condemnation following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.

Kirk, 31, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot by a sniper during an outdoor speaking engagement on Wednesday. As of Thursday morning, authorities continue their manhunt for the shooter, whose motives and political affiliations remain unknown.

Busch — a Democrats — issued a statement condemning the killing and "political violence," echoing similar responses from politicians across party lines.

“The shooting of national political commentator Charlie Kirk today in Utah is a tragic reminder of what political violence truly is — people being harmed for their views, their votes, or their identities.

As I’ve said before, stretching that definition cheapens its meaning and disrespects the real struggles people face in defense of democracy. Regardless of our beliefs, violence must never be part of political discourse,” Busch said.

“It is imperative that all of us, no matter our views, speak with one voice in condemning this heinous and unconscionable act.”

The tragic incident represents the latest in a disturbing pattern of political violence in America. In June, Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman was assassinated in her home, prompting Gov. Tim Walz to call it "an act of targeted political violence."

Last year, President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt during a Pennsylvania rally.
