Metuchen Police Warn Of Sophisticated Jewelry Theft Scams Targeting Residents
Several residents have been targeted over the past few days, police said.
METUCHEN, NJ - Local police are warning residents about a new wave of sophisticated jewelry theft scams that have recently targeted multiple residents in the area. The Metuchen Police Department issued an alert this week after receiving reports of criminals using elaborate deception tactics to steal valuable jewelry from unsuspecting community members.
The scams involve perpetrators who approach victims in public spaces and use carefully orchestrated methods to steal their jewelry while leaving behind imitations.
According to police reports, the criminals employ two primary tactics. In the first method, scammers engage victims in friendly conversation while discreetly placing fake jewelry on them. During this distraction, they skillfully remove the victim's authentic pieces without detection, leaving the person wearing counterfeit items of no value.

The second approach involves thieves place fake jewelry on victims and then demand payment for the items. When victims refuse to purchase the unwanted jewelry and request its removal, the criminals comply—but simultaneously steal the victim's real jewelry during the process.
The schemes typically unfold quickly in busy public areas where the criminal activity can easily blend in with normal social interactions. Police note that victims often don't realize they've been robbed until well after the encounter has ended.
