METUCHEN, NJ – What began as an evening of nostalgia and music quickly transformed into an emergency response situation when severe thunderstorms and flash flooding struck Metuchen during a scheduled concert featuring NSYNC member Joey Fatone.

Fatone was set to perform Monday evening as part of the Summer Sounds concert series, appearing alongside the cover band Saved by the 90s. The event was originally planned for Metuchen Downtown but was relocated to Metuchen High School due to the threatening weather forecast.

Despite the venue change, hundreds of concertgoers safely lined up inside the high school before the storm arrived. However, as flash flooding affected various roads throughout the city and water rescues became necessary, the concert venue quickly transformed into a temporary emergency center.

Mayor Jonathan M. Busch praised emergency professionals for their quick response. "Meanwhile, Joey and Saved by the 90s hunkered down with everyone who waited out the storm and made it all worthwhile," Busch said.

Rather than letting the emergency dampen the evening, Fatone embraced the situation and helped lift spirits during the challenging circumstances. "Before the night was over, Joey helped us thank our first responders the best way he knows how: with heart, humor, and this great photo!" the mayor said.

Busch also recognized the Metuchen Downtown Alliance staff and volunteers for "pulling off another fantastic event and for helping turn a challenging night into a memorable one."

While significant flooding occurred across parts of Metuchen, officials reported no damage from high winds. Water levels receded late into the evening as emergency teams remained on standby to provide assistance where needed.
