How Do You Feel Fort Lee’s Emergency Services Are Doing?

Fort Lee's new Fire Chief was put to the test last weekend, while Fort Lee Police had a busy week as well. How do you think they did?

Fort Lee Mark Sokolich praised the work of Fort Lee’s volunteer firefighters during last Saturday night’s fatal fire on McCloud Dr. at the Mayor and Council meeting Thursday.

“I had … the privilege along with [councilman Harvey Sohmer] of first hand experience of our volunteer fire department in action,” Sokolich said. “It was the most incredible orchestration of effort and of commitment and of bravery. And it just re-confirms that we here in government are doing the right thing by devoting the resources to these emergency services that we’re doing.”

In a profile feature on Fort Lee Patch last week Fort Lee Fire Chief Jeff Silver said he is proud of his department and excited for his one-year term as chief.

“I think the Fort Lee Fire Department has one of the best fire departments in the state,” Silver said. “The people who are involved in it are constantly trying to make it better.”

Silver also told Patch the fire department is “constantly recruiting” and looking for volunteers, who can be as young as 16.

Meanwhile, Fort Lee Police arrested 15 people last week on charges ranging from heroin, marijuana, and prescription drug possession to shoplifting and domestic violence-related threats and attempts to harm. Fort Lee Police also reported 32 ongoing investigations in its weekly blotter.

Now we want to know what you think. How do you feel Fort Lee’s emergency services are doing? Do you agree with the mayor that local government is “doing the right thing” by devoting the resources it does to the volunteer fire department? How are the police doing in your estimation? Would you ever consider becoming a volunteer firefighter?
