Knox Boxes Now Available for Purchase

A residential box costs $159.00 plus an additional $13.00 for shipping.

Borough residents have been given an opportunity to protect themselves and their property with “Borough approved” knox boxes.

The idea of resident knox boxes came from Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer, who brought up the idea at the Jan. 17 . A knox box is a quarter-inch steel case that is mounted on the exterior of a resident’s home. Inside the steel case is the resident’s key, allowing emergency responders to gain entry to a residence without having to force an entry which takes time and causes costly repairs.

“The key which will unlock the residential Knox-Box is kept secure on Borough’s fire apparatus and can only be accessed after it is “released” by radio signal sent by the Monmouth County Communications Center after emergency responders arrive on location,” explained Freehold Borough Fire Official Garry Jackson.

Jackson also explained that residential knox boxes are purchased directly from the Knox Company by the resident. The Knox Company is also responsible for mounting the box. Freehold Borough does not charge any fee’s to residents who voluntarily choose to participate in the program.
