Obituary: John "Murphy" O'Connell, 82

O'Connell was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and parishioner of St. Robert's Bellarmine Catholic Church.

John “Murphy” P. O’Connell, 82, of Freehold Township died on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011 at home surrounded by his family. Murphy was born in Union City, was raised in Jersey City and had lived in Edison and Brick before settling in Freehold Township in 2004. O’Connell was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and a structural iron worker for Local 45 in Jersey City until he retired in 1981. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #2151, in Brick and was a parishioner of in Freehold Township.

O’Connell is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marion; two daughters, Robyn Atcachunas and her husband, John of Metuchen and Kim O’Connell of Freehold Township; three grandchildren, Danielle Atcachunas, Michael Atcachunas, Christopher Atcachunas; a brother, Michael Marron and his wife, Lydia of San Diego, CA; and two nephews, Austin Marron and Christian Marron.

Visiting will be at the located at 100 Elton-Adelphia Road in Freehold Township, on Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Rite of Committal at the funeral home on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. followed by his 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 61 Georgia Road, Freehold Township.

Entombment to follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery located in North Arlington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of O’Connell may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 417005, Boston, MA, 02241.
