Atlantic City Police Rescue Screaming Philly Boy, 10, From Surf

The boy was rescued off an unguarded beach after 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 28

ATLANTIC CITY – Two Atlantic City police officers were able to free a 10–year–old Philadelphia boy who was stuck in a wood groin as ocean waves crashed over him recently, according to the police department's Facebook page.

Officers Darrell Catanio and Jonathan Walsh responded to the ocean at South Carolina Avenue at 8:09 p.m. on June 28 on a report of a swimmer who was screaming for help. The boy could not free himself and the water was chest deep, the report states.

Catanio, a former member of the Atlantic City Beach Patrol, entered the water to rescue the boy. Catanio yanked the boy's trapped foot from the wood, then carried him to the nearest beach patrol tent, where they were met by first aid personnel.

The boy was treated on the scene for a lower leg injury. Catanio was taken to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division, where he was treated and released for an injury he sustained during the rescue, the post states.

"With the summer season in full swing, we need our residents and visitors to be mindful when enjoying the beach and ocean," the post says. "Do not go into the water if the beach is not protected by a member of our beach patrol. This is not only for the safety of the swimmer, but for someone that may need to rescue them."
