Atlantic County To Offer COVID-19 Boosters Starting Wednesday

Beginning Wednesday, residents can get Moderna and J&J COVID-19 booster shots in Northfield and Hammonton.

ATLANTIC COUNTY, NJ — In addition to adult flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, the Atlantic County Division of Public Health will offer the Johnson & Johnson and Moderna COVID-19 booster shots to eligible residents 18 years and older at its weekly free clinics in Northfield and Hammonton.

Beginning Wednesday, residents can get vaccinations and boosters in Northfield at 201 S. Shore Road, Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon, and in Hammonton at 310 Bellevue Avenue each Tuesday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those seeking booster shots should bring their vaccination cards and proof of identification with them.

COVID-19 boosters provide a “boost” of protection as vaccine efficacy can decrease over time, thereby reducing the amount of protection against the virus, health officials said.

“The holiday season is fast approaching when people may be traveling, attending social gatherings and spending more time with family and friends. A booster shot can provide added protection and reduce the likelihood of severe illness,” said County Executive Dennis Levinson.

The J&J booster is recommended two or more months after the initial COVID-19 vaccination while the Moderna booster is recommended six months after.

The Centers for Disease Control has approved the ability to “mix or match” vaccination brands so someone who initially received the one-dose J&J vaccine, may now receive a Moderna or Pfizer booster, and vice versa. But those who receive an initial first dose of Moderna or Pfizer should receive a second dose of the same brand. Only the booster shots may be mixed or matched.

The Division of Public Health also provides third doses of Moderna for those 65 and older and/or immunocompromised, a minimum of four weeks after completion of the two-dose regimen.

It also offers the initial one-dose J&J and two-dose Moderna COVID-19 vaccinations for those 18 and older.

Clinics are available on a walk-in basis without an appointment. Face masks are required for entrance. For more information, please call 609-645-5933.
