Camden County To Treat For Mosquitos Wednesday

Chances of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday could increase mosquito breeding.

CAMDEN COUNTY, NJ — Camden County this Wednesday will spray several areas for mosquitos after projected rainfall, which could create a breeding ground for the disease-carrying pests.

In a release, the county said it will spray between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., weather permitting. The spray used is safe for humans and pets but could be harmful to those with respiratory sensitivities.

While spraying helps cut down on the spread of mosquitos, residents are asked to contribute to the effort by pouring out stagnant water that serves as a breeding ground for the insects, said Freeholder Jeff Nash, liaison to the Camden County Mosquito Commission.

“Mosquitos need standing water to breed, so the first thing you should do after any rain is check your yard and remove any standing water to help eliminate the threat," Nash said. "This simple act can help reduce the pest population in your neighborhood, and assist the efforts of the Camden County Mosquito Control Commission.”

Nash said the Mosquito Control Commission works with Public Health Environmental Laboratories in Trenton to identify the West Nile Virus in mosquito samples.

Residents are urged to take steps to prevent themselves from the virus, and from other illnesses carried by mosquitos. Simple steps live covering pools and treating them with chlorine, installing screens on windows and using insect repellents with 10 to 35 percent DEET.
