Driver Killed In South Jersey After Car Strikes Pole: Police

The man was airlifted to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

GLASSBORO, NJ — Glassboro police are investigating a fatal utility-pole crash that took place Monday afternoon.

The crash, reported just after 4 p.m., occurred after a 62-year-old man lost control of his 2022 Toyota Camry and struck a utility pole on 270 East High St. (Route 322, mile marker 18.6), police said.

The Camry then overturned, according to law enforcement in the Gloucester County borough. Officials flew the man to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities didn't publicly disclose the decedent's name.

Crashes have killed nine people in Gloucester County so far this year, according to state data. The county sustained 40 deaths from vehicle collisions in 2022, including 12 people killed as of May 3 last year.

Fatal accidents around the state occurred more frequently in recent years. New Jersey averaged 569.3 deaths per year from 2018-20 and 695.5 per year from 2021-22, according to the State Police database. So far, the state has reported 162 deaths from collisions this year — down from New Jersey's death tolls as of May 3 in 2021 (178) and last year (197).
