Theater and Film Abound, New Teacher Appointments

The Mainstage Center for the Performing Arts has two events this week, including "Magic Up Our Sleeve."

The Gloucester Township Board of Education meets a 6 p.m. Monday at its administrative office at 17 Erial Road.

Agenda items include the appointments of a new business administrator, supervisor of special education, 22 teachers, and the scheduled approval of thousands of dollars in vendor contracts.

The township Council also meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Municipal Hall on Chews Landing Road. Agenda items include discussions on the community development block grant action play and change of scope considerations for 2013 road program and professional services.

The township holds its annual National Night Out activities Tuesday in neighborhoods through out Gloucester Township. From 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. residents throughout the township are asked to lock their doors, turn on outdoor lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Also, several neighborhood watch groups will be hosting a variety of special events, such as block parties, cookouts, carnivals, dessert tasting parties, bring your favorite covered dish parties, pool parties and flashlight walks.

Theater is also on tap this week from the Mainstage Center for the Performing Arts with a production of Magic Up Our Sleeve.

This high-energy musical revue features many well-known numbers performed throughout the years at Summer Stage, including from High School Musical 2, Annie,  Lion King, Peter Pan and Beauty and the Beast.

Performances are on Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the Dennis Flyer Theatre, Lincoln Hall, Camden County College, 200 College Drive, Blackwood. Mainstage’s Summer Stage Video Film students will screen their original short films at the Dennis Flyer Theatre.

This event marks the culmination of a seven-week program during which students participate in the entire process of creating a film, from screenwriting and story boarding to shooting and editing. As Summer Stage celebrates its 25th anniversary season, it also observes the 10th anniversary of the film program. The program began with six participants and now consistently has more than 20. Movie Nights in the Park at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Chews Landing Road will feature Oz: The Great and Powerful on an outdoor screen at dusk. It’s a free event sponsored by the township.

The Blackwood Farmers Market ends the week on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It’s held on Saturdays weekly through the fall in the parking lot of the Blackwood Library on the Black Horse Pike.
