4 Vote-Lead Makes Warren County Sheriff Gallant GOP Primary Winner

Provisional ballots still need to be counted, but unofficial results show Gallant in the lead over Washington Township Police Chief James McDonald.

Just four votes stood between Republican incumbent Warren County Sheriff David Gallant and challenger James McDonald as ballots from Tuesday's primary election were counted. But those four votes pegged Gallant the winner of the GOP race so far until provisional ballots can be counted.

McDonald, chief of the Washington Township Police Department, had received 3,548 votes while Gallant received 3,552, according to The Express Times. McDonald is planning to challenge the votes with a recount.

If elected in November, Gallant would be serving his second term as sheriff. Formerly, he served as the Warren County public safety director and spent 26 years with New Jersey State Police, the Times reported.
