'Highly Intoxicated' Man Threatened to Kill Cop After Assault on Officer: Police

Mansfield Twp. man was initially reported for allegedly yelling outside a house Wednesday night, police report.

A Mansfield Township man spit on, kicked, and threatened to kill a police officer Tuesday night after being placed under arrest for disorderly conduct, Hackettstown Police said.

At 11:32 p.m. police responded to the 600 block of Washington Street for a report of a man screaming behind a house, Sgt. Darren Tynan said. When police arrived, they saw a man run from behind the house, but officers were able to make contact with the person, later identified as Paul Wiedeman, 25, Tynan said.

Wiedemann was “highly intoxicated” and yelling incoherently, and while the officer was trying to speak with the man, Wiedemann became combative, Tynan said, and raised his fists toward the police.

At that point Wiedemann was placed in handcuffs but spit on the officer and then kicked him in the leg, Tynan said. Wiedemann, while sitting on the ground, then kicked the same officer in the inner thigh, Tynan said.

Wiedemann was taken to Hackettstown Regional Medical Center for an evaluation. While there, he threatened to kill the officer and called him “Hitler,” and stated he was going to “punch his face into a pancake,” Tynan said.

Wiedemann then threatened to “find the officer” when he was released, Tynan said.

He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, terroristic threats, disorderly conduct, defiant trespass, and resisting arrest. Wiedemann was jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail with no 10-percent option but posted the amount and was released pending a court appearance.
