Damaging Weather Conditions Could Hit Northwest New Jersey's Thunderstorm Watch Area

Hail, wind up to 66 miles-per-hour and frequent lightning could be coming to Northwest New Jersey and sections of other states by 10 p.m.

NEW JERSEY — Parts of northern New Jersey are under a severe Thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to the national weather service.

The National Weather Service issued the watch ahead of the potential that Sussex and Warren Counties, along with parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania, may be threatened with hail, wind and frequent lightning during the weather event.

As part of the watch declared late Wednesday afternoon, hail up to the size of a quarter could drop, wind gusts could reach up to 66 miles-per-hour and lightning could frequently light up the skies by Wednesday night.

As part of the National Weather Service’s forecasts, weather conditions in and near Sussex and Warren Counties could intensify later on Wednesday night, with between a quarter to a half-inch of rain possible, along with the hail, wind gusts and lightning.

After midnight into Thursday, there could be patchy fog, with temperatures dipping from 85 degrees to 65 overnight.

On Thursday during the day, forecasters predict a daytime high of 76 degrees, with more thunderstorms possibly rumbling through Sussex County after 1 p.m.. If that happens, it will break up the fog, with less than a tenth of an inch of rain expected, though potentially higher rainfalls with thunderstorm activity.

Rain and thunderstorms may continue through Friday, with a high of 75 degrees, before sunny skies return with a high of 79 on Saturday in Sussex County; and a high of about 81 expected in Warren County.
