8 Yr. Old Wins Award for Reporting Haddonfield House Fire

Firefighting runs Joseph Poliafico's family.

Firefighting runs in the family in the Poliafico household.

Just ask 8-year-old Joseph. His quick thinking and action helped report a fire at a neighbors home on Hopkins Avenue last month. The family was at home at the time and unaware of the fire, but were able to get out and save the family pet before the fire was quickly extinguished.

In recognition for his action, Haddon Fire Co. No.1 honored Joseph with an award Thursday. He stood, beaming, next to his dad, who knows a thing or two about firefighting. Lt. Brian Polafico is a Haddonfield firefighter who has clearly made an impression on his young son.

The fire Joseph reported on Aug. 25 was contained to the front porch area of a home on Hopkins Avenue. At the time, Joseph was outside in his yard and saw smoke coming from the home. He decided to look closer. Realizing that the house was on fire, he immediately ran to find his parents and to call the fire department.

His dad was then able to notify the homeowners, who were in the back of the house, and unaware of the fire in the front. The family and their pet dog safely evacuated the home.

Fire Officials said his action was instrumental in helping to protect and save his neighbors property.
