Smoky Fire in Historic District Damages Building but Causes No Injuries
The blaze Friday morning tied up firefighters for more than an hour.
A smoky fire in a 175-year-old building in the heart of Haddonfield’s historic district kept firefighters busy for more than an hour late Friday morning.
The blaze at 229 Kings Highway East was reported just after 11 a.m. and firefighters were still on the scene at 1 p.m. No injuries were reported.
The building is just two doors from the 261-year-old Indian King Tavern. The tavern, a museum and landmark, was not damaged, but windows were busted out of the historic home where the blaze was sparked. A wooden addition in the rear of the home, where firemen said the fire seems to have started, was charred at a second-floor window. Chunks on the side of the dormer were hacked out by fireman in an effort to douse the flames.
