Cabaret Review to Benefit Catherine Guererra Charitable Fund

Somerset Valley Playhouse will host George Hansel's "Burly Man Sings Girly Songs."

A benefit performance at Somerset Valley Playhouse will feature actor George Hansel in his cabaret production, "Burly Man Sings Girly Songs: My Life as a Show-Tune Queen and Sexual Outlaw."

Proceeds of the presentation will benefit the Catherine Guerrera Charitable Fund of the Princeton Community Foundation, which was established to support educational opportunities for students with disabilities. The fund was launched in honor of Guerrera, who overcame poverty and a disability to become first postmaster of the Flagtown Post Office.

Guerrera was born in Pontelandolfo, Italy, in 1911, and at the age of 2, she was stricken with polio that stunted her growth and made her right arm and leg useless.

The performance is at 8 p.m. Aug. 24 and promises to make audiences laugh, think and bop to the musical story told by Hansel. "Burly Man Sings" is Hansel's 90-minute cabaret romp using humor, show tunes, multimedia and a little help from his musical director Evie Ellis, musical guest Mary Lawrence and “voices” from his past to detail his journey of discovery growing up in the '60s and '70s.

Tickets are $25 and reservations are encouraged. Contributions to the fund are also welcome, without attending the event, by sending a check to the Princeton Community Foundation, 15 Princess Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648; write “Catherine Guerrera Charitable Fund” on the memo line of the check.
