Cop Caught Shoplifting 4 Different Times At Supermarket In Hillsborough: Police

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A North Plainfield Police Sergeant was caught shoplifting from a grocery store in Hillsborough, police said.
David Canica was charged with four counts of shoplifting, a disorderly persons offense. Canica serves with the North Plainfield Police and was promoted to Sergeant in August 2024.
On Wednesday at 12:05 p.m., Hillsborough Township Police went to Weis Supermarket at 315 Route 206 for multiple reported thefts.

Loss Prevention staff said Canica was seen leaving the store without paying for items in his shopping cart on four different occasions, according to Hillsborough Police.
The shoplifting incidents happened on Nov. 3, Nov. 9, Nov. 10, and Nov. 19, with a total value of the items of $213.82.

Store Loss Prevention was able to identify Canica after he scanned his customer rewards card, said police. Canica was contacted by investigating officers and turned himself in at the Hillsborough Township Police headquarters.
He was processed and released with a court date.
North Plainfield Police Chief Alan McKay confirmed Canica is a Sergeant with his department.
"I am aware of the arrest and charges," said McKay. "I will be taking action tomorrow or in the very near future, he will likely be placed on suspension."
