First Task for Dems' New Chairman: Find Candidates

At its Jan. 12 meeting, the Hillsborough Democratic Organization elected Art Skaar, its 2013 candidate for Hillsborough Township Committee, to serve as its new chairman.  

Skaar succeeds former Chairman Michael Goldberg, who tendered his resignation to focus on his responsibilities as Somerset County Representative to the NJ State Democratic Committee, his duties as Secretary of the Somerset County Democratic Committee, and his recent election to the board of directors of the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.

At the same meeting, Sonya Martin, a former member of the Hillsborough Township Committee, was elected first vice chairwoman of the Democratic Municipal Committee to fill a vacancy in that position.

“I have known Sonya for 20 years, and she is one of the most hard working and astute people I know,” said Skaar.  “I can’t do this without her.”             

“It has been a pleasure serving as chair of this outstanding organization,” said Goldberg, thanking the members for their support. ”When Art agreed to be our candidate last year, he really jumped in with both feet.  I feel we are in good hands with Art as our chair.”

Also at the meeting, former Deputy Mayor Christine Jensen and former Planning Board Chairman Christian Jensen were appointed by Skaar, with committee approval to vacant positions on the Democratic County Committee.

“This party is a meritocracy,” Skaar said. “We want people who are loyal Democrats, who work hard and who are willing to work with others.”

One of Skaar’s first responsibilities will be screening candidates for the Hillsborough Township Committee in the 2014 election.  

“Anyone interested in seeking this nomination should submit their resume to me at PO Box 5878, Hillsborough NJ 08844-5878,” he said.  “In order to be eligible, potential candidates must be registered voters and must have declared as members of the Democratic Party.  Resumes should be received no later than Feb. 14, 2014.  All applicants will be considered.”
