HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough Township Committee Members Samantha Hand and Jill Gomez shared a statement following the death of Renee Nicole Good.
Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and mother of three, was shot to death during an encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota last Wednesday. The shooting has ignited a national controversy, with many people criticizing ICE and decrying the immigration crackdown happening under President Donald Trump – and many others staunchly defending the actions of the officer. "As mothers and as elected officials, we are deeply heartbroken by the tragic death of Renee Nicole Good, a young mother of three whose life was taken during an encounter involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.
No parent should lose their life in this way, and no children should be left without their mother. This was a devastating and, in our view, avoidable tragedy.

We recognize that people will approach this incident from different perspectives and will reach different conclusions about the events that led to Ms. Good’s death and questions of responsibility. While opinions may differ, the pain of this loss, particularly for her children, is something we all should acknowledge.
As representatives of Hillsborough Township, we are committed to ensuring that every family in our community feels safe. Public safety must be grounded in trust, accountability, and the understanding that the use of force is always a last resort. We value our close and collaborative relationship with the Hillsborough Township Police Department, whose officers prioritize de-escalation and the protection of life in the difficult situations they face.
We mourn this heartbreaking loss and extend our deepest condolences to Ms. Good’s family. Our thoughts and prayers are with her children, loved ones, and all who are grieving in the wake of this terrible event.
