A Firefighter’s Journey: Progress, Passion & Serving The Community
Firefighter Karlie Cunningham shares her experiences with Hillsborough Fire District and serving the Somerset County community.

First responders are a vital part of our communities, keeping us safe and playing an integral role in daily life. Patch and T-Mobile have partnered on a Ride-Along series to showcase the important work these departments and individuals do every day.
We had the opportunity to speak with Karlie Cunningham of Hillsborough Fire District to learn more about the department, life as a firefighter and the impact of their work.
Can you tell us about Hillsborough Fire District (HFD)?
Firefighter Cunningham: [Hillsborough Fire District] covers Somerset County, 55.1 square miles. [We have] 3 volunteer firehouses that are covered by career staff during the day [and] 1 contracted FD that works closely with Hillsborough Fire District; Fire marshals work out of the HFD Headquarters. [We have] various apparatus from engines, 1 tower ladder, a rehab unit and a high water truck. Fire marshals operate a fire investigation unit and a mini pumper.
What does a typical day look like for a first responder at HFD?
Firefighter Cunningham: Our shifts begin at 6 a.m. and we work 12 hours. As soon as we are in, we’re ready to answer calls. Any other time we are training, ensuring the apparatus and equipment are ready for use, cleaning, doing fire reports or preplanning and inspections.
What inspired you to pursue a career as a first responder?
Firefighter Cunningham: I started as an EMT in a combination (fire/EMS) department. One day, I came in, and all the ambulances were gone on calls. Everyone convinced me to get on the firetruck for the next call, which happened to be a motor vehicle accident. I have been on those scenes before, but it was different from a fire perspective. I’ve been in love ever since and took every class I could to learn more!
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Hillsborough community?
Firefighter Cunningham: I like that we’re a progressing department, in a likewise progressing town. There’s so much new building going on, the community is very diverse and we have a supportive community.
What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a first responder?
Firefighter Cunningham: Being physically prepared for the job is half the battle. Whether it’s police, fire or EMS, you may be doing intense work at any given time the tones drop. High-intensity workouts may be a start to see what it’s like!
