Hillsborough's Oldest Boy Scout Troop Honored By Township Committee

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — The Township's oldest and first scout troop was honored by the Mayor and Township Committee recently.

At the Aug. 12 Township Committee meeting, Mayor John Ciccarelli presented Boy Scout Troop 89 with a proclamation to honor them for 68 years in the Hillsborough community.

Founded in 1958, Troop 89 is Hillsborough's first Scout troop.

More than 135 Eagle Scouts from Troop 89 have led projects benefiting Hillsborough’s parks, schools, library, places of worship, and public spaces, creating trails, gardens, recycling facilities, trophy cases, and more.

For decades, Troop 89 adopted South Branch Road, organizing quarterly cleanups that keep the road clean and welcoming.

The Troop’s annual food drives have delivered thousands of pounds of food to the Hillsborough Township Community Assistance Network (C.A.N.).

Troop 89 also collects and retires American flags from a bin located in the Hillsborough Township Municipal Building and has earned the Gold Level "Journey to Excellence" award for its outstanding performance in service, advancement, and outdoor activities.

Although Troop 89’s membership suffered during the pandemic, through creative campaigning and outreach the troop has regained its momentum over the last two years and is thriving once again.

Troop 89 has been a cornerstone of community service, leadership, and environmental stewardship for more than 67 years in Hillsborough.

"The Mayor and Hillsborough Township Committee, do hereby recognize and honor Boy Scout Troop 89 for its ongoing impact and inspiration to all who call Hillsborough home," according to the proclamation.
